I did sleep, though my dreams were haunted by silvery bands of lightning, Reyla feral and slashing out with her blade, and Drask cawing. In my dreams, I could understand what Drask said.

Be very afraid.

I woke when the sun pierced the canvas overhead, gouging my eyes, and quickly packed my bedding, stuffing it into my bag. Outside, I dismantled my tent. My leather clothing was dry, and I tucked it into my bag as well.

Reyla and Brodine emerged from their tents, both murmuring a greeting before trudging into the woods in opposite directions.

Vexxion was already up, assuming he’d left his vigilant watch by the fire. He helped me pack my tent in its canvas sack before he slung my bags over his shoulder, taking them to the dragon who’d transport them to our next stopping point tonight.

Brodine and Reyla returned and meandered to the river. I was grateful Reyla held her bag of things. Maybe she’d wash, comb her hair, and put on clean clothing.

The only way to move forward was to drag your body even if it kicked and screamed.

They came back—Reyla looking much more like her old self—and we loaded the last of our belongings on the dragons.

I stroked Seevar’s nose and told him how pleased I was with how he was behaving. “Make sure you listen to me today, little guy.”

He bunted my belly with his nose and deluged me with a nice shower of sparks I had to stomp on to keep them from setting the meadow ablaze. I groomed him, savoring the normalcy of the moment when I stood on the cusp of something terrifyingly new. He moaned and shivered while I worked on his shoulders, pushing hard to loosen up his muscles. Unused to flying all day, he must be as sore as me. At least I had exercises I could do to work out the stiffness.

After I finished, he sighed while I stroked his face, giving him forehead kisses. He truly was a sweet creature, and I was grateful I’d given him a chance.

While I saddled him and climbed up his leg, Vexxion kicked dirt over the smoldering ruins of the fire. He pivoted and walked over to where we waited on our dragons.

I peered around.

Brodine. Reyla. Zayde, me, and Vexxion.

“Where’s Farnoll?” I asked as Vexxion leaped up onto the spine of his mount standing not far from mine.

Zayde said nothing, his attention focused on the woods to our left.

Gold flickered through Vexxion’s deep blue eyes when he cast them my way. “Farnoll won’t be joining us.”

“Why not?”

“He’s indisposed.”
